After having read this article share where your heart is, with what theory of learning? Explain why.
My heart isn't with just one of the theories, it's a mix of all three theories. I believe in the drill and skill portion of behaviorism, but I disagree with the positive reinforcement portion. There are some portions of Math, the formulas and processes, that need to be memorized through drill and skill. I believe Alfie Kohn, that we shouldn't reward our students, the learning process itself should be the reward. Children need to develop a love of learning, they need to be intrinsic learners.
I agree with the methods of cognitive constructivism when it comes to how students discover learning. It is the teachers job to facilitate the learning process and help the students assimilate new knowledge to old concepts. Instead of spoon feeding students formulas and having work through problem after problem, teachers can go through activities where the students discover the algorithm or the formula on their own. This gets the class more actively involved in stimulating conversation. Drill and skill only requires the teacher to talk and the students to write.
I like what is involved with Social Constructivism when they talk about the actual and potential of every student. Every student comes into our classrooms with some actual knowledge of the subject matter learned from previous courses, at home, or through some other type of media. There potential achievement is unlimited, I believe everyone has the capacity to learn and to achieve his or her potential.
