This may be the most interesting article I have ever read. It is also the most honest and real article I have ever laid my eyes upon. For this author to say that the United States school system's purpose is to create an obedient population and a controllable workforce, is truly eye-opening. Being a potential math teacher, I don't want to believe a word that this man has written in this article. I want to believe the other views he discusses, that education is the great equalizer. I want to believe that I can get a better job because of my education.
He's right though. As much as we are supposed to be change agents, all I see and all I hear about in today's schools is the same old things. It's all about direct instruction and not about indirect instruction, like the short video we saw with the two classrooms across the hall from each other. We learn about NCLB (No Child Left Behind) and FAPE (Free And Public Education). But do we ever think about the subject matter brought up in this article?
It is a scary reality to think that the sole purpose of school is to keep us divided. He says in the article that schools promote the leaders and depress the workers. The leaders run the large corporations and the workers do the manual labor. The manual workforce buy sneakers and SUV's they see on commercials designed by the large corporations. The rich get richer and the poor get poorer.
I also found it interesting that after a medical leave of absence, he came back to find out that his job had been terminated and his teaching certificate was also terminated. If not for the person that saw it all take place, he wouldn't have been able to come back and support his family. We put education up on a pedestal because we want to think of it as this grand institution, but the truth is that it is just like any other corporation in the United States. It is flawed and needs to be changed.
